The Federal Government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants. The payment will run for six months and start in November 2026.
Government officials and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) agreed on the measure on October 27, 2026. They met in Abuja for a conciliation meeting. The goal is to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.
What the allowance covers
The memorandum says the support applies “across all levels” of the public service. Workers will receive N70,000 each month from November 2026 to April 2027.
That adds up to N420,000 per beneficiary. However, this is not a lump sum. Workers will get it in monthly portions over the six months.
Questions still unanswered
Several details remain unclear. The memorandum does not give an exact payment date. It also does not say whether the money will come with monthly salaries.
Likewise, it is silent on how workers will receive the money. It does not say whether anyone must apply. It also does not list the specific categories of public servants who qualify. These points will need clarification from the relevant authorities.
State and local government workers
The agreement urges state and local governments to join the arrangement. It also asks unions to push for implementation.
Even so, the document does not show that any state or council has approved the payment. Workers outside federal service should therefore check with their own employers.
The minimum wage dispute continues
The transport allowance is separate from the national minimum wage. The statutory minimum rose from N30,000 to N70,000 in 2024.
Both sides still disagree on the effective date for the new wage arrangement under discussion. To move things forward, they agreed to set up a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee. It will begin work immediately.
Other resolutions
The meeting settled several other welfare issues.
- Peculiar allowance arrears: The government will pay outstanding arrears effective from May 1, 2026. Payment starts in November 2026 in three equal monthly instalments. The total amount has not been disclosed.
- Health workers: The government will clear 19 months of outstanding allowances within three months, starting in December 2026.
- Health salary structure: The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission will assess the cost of adjusting the Consolidated Health Salary Structure within three weeks. No final decision has been announced.
- Agricultural officers: Officials are verifying beneficiaries and costs for a hazard allowance. They expect to finish within two weeks.
- Tax relief: The proposal for workers will go to the National Executive Council for consideration.
What happens next
The government and the NLC will meet again in one month to review progress. For now, the allowance offers temporary relief. How much workers actually gain will depend on implementation and further administrative guidance.
