Country singer John Anderson, the voice behind “Swingin’,” “Straight Tequila Night” and “Seminole Wind,” has died at 71.
His family announced the news on Wednesday, October 21. They said he passed away peacefully in his sleep, a few weeks before his 72nd birthday.
“To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more,” the family said in a statement.
They described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. His greatest legacy to them, they added, was the love he shared and the memories they will cherish.
Anderson was a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee. He attended the ceremony for this year’s honourees on Sunday, October 18, just days before his death.
Tributes have since started to pour in from fellow artists. Country star Blake Shelton shared his shock in a post on X.
“I am sick and I am stunned,” Shelton wrote. He called Anderson his hero and friend. Knowing him personally, he added, showed him that Anderson was even more remarkable than he had imagined.
Anderson leaves behind a musical legacy that helped define his place in country music. His family now mourns a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.
