Amnesty International and the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have condemned the killing of Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Masusuka in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. Both want a swift and transparent investigation, and the prosecution of those behind it.
Gunmen on motorcycles reportedly shot the cleric on Monday. He had just stepped out of his house for his usual evening preaching.
Amnesty Calls Killing Disturbing
Amnesty International described the attack as disturbing. It urged the authorities to investigate promptly and effectively, and to bring the suspects to justice.
In a post on its Facebook page, the group said Masusuka used his sermons to promote peaceful coexistence and interfaith dialogue. He also spoke against violent extremism and radicalisation. Amnesty added that he had faced threats and intimidation throughout his life.
Northern Youths Demand Full Probe
The NYCN called the killing a cowardly crime. In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Isah Abubakar, it said the attack struck at scholarship, truth and the moral fabric of Northern Nigeria.
The council described the cleric as a revered scholar, mentor and spiritual guide. It said his death was a major loss to the region.
It asked the Federal Government and the Katsina State Government to carry out a full, independent investigation. It also wants any conspiracy behind the attack uncovered.
The group demanded that the gunmen, their masterminds, financiers and accomplices all be identified and prosecuted. It warned against letting the case become another unresolved killing.
“The era of empty promises, superficial condolence messages, and decorative investigative committees is over,” the council said. It insisted that the authorities must show the political will to protect citizens and end impunity.
Abubakar added that Northern youths would closely monitor the investigation. The council also prayed that Almighty Allah grants the late cleric eternal rest.
