Other Countries Elected
Nigeria was not the only winner. The Assembly also elected Brazil, Burundi, the Dominican Republic and Germany. Ghana, Ireland, Japan, Jordan and Kuwait made the list too. The rest are Nepal, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Uruguay and Zambia.
What the Council Does
The Council works to protect human rights around the world. It investigates abuses and reviews each country’s rights record. It also recommends solutions to rights problems.
In addition, the body focuses on vulnerable groups, including women, children and minorities. It promotes equality and fights discrimination. Furthermore, it supports rights education and responds to emergencies involving serious violations.
Membership brings more global visibility and a stronger voice in international decisions. It also adds responsibility. Nigeria will now help shape the Council’s work for three years.
