Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says he does not need any guarantees from the club about his job. The pressure on him has grown after a poor run of results.
Carrick spoke at a press conference on Thursday, ahead of United’s Premier League trip to Chelsea on Saturday. Sky Sports News reported his comments.
His position has come under scrutiny since United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth on Sunday. The defeat extended the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
Sky Sports News also reported that chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox met at the Carrington training ground this week. They discussed the next steps.
Carrick said he is focused on his job and not on talk about his future. “I don’t need assurances from anyone,” he said. He added that he understands the responsibility that comes with being manager.
He also said he pays little attention to media criticism. “I only see the things I need to see,” he said. What matters to him, he explained, is what the supporters think. He cares about the atmosphere at the stadium and what the fans see from the team.
Asked if he was surprised to still be in charge, Carrick said no. He is desperate to improve things, he said, and he knows what the team needs to do better.
Sky Sports News reported that he will stay in charge for the Chelsea game.
