Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Lung Surgery, Vatican Confirms Cancer Diagnosis

Date:

Pope Leo XIV has had part of his right lung removed in Rome. The Vatican says the operation went well.

Doctors also confirmed that the pontiff has lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.

How the Surgery Went

Surgeons operated at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. They removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung. The team used a video-assisted technique, and the procedure took about 90 minutes.

Vatican bulletins say no complications arose. The 71-year-old also woke up normally afterwards.

How the Diagnosis Was Confirmed

Earlier tests had already pointed to the disease. However, the final confirmation came during the operation itself. Doctors examined tissue samples on the spot, and those results established that the growth was pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

Prognosis and Recovery

Oncologists cited by news agencies describe the outlook as encouraging. They say the cancer was found early. As a result, the chances of a good recovery look strong.

The Pope is expected to spend about a week in hospital. Meanwhile, doctors are carrying out further routine evaluations.
