A Berom youth association is demanding urgent action to protect residents in Plateau State. Its call follows a fresh attack on a mining site in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. It says suspected gunmen killed three men there.
The Association’s Appeal
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) issued a statement on Friday night. Its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, signed it.
The group asked the Plateau State and federal governments to act. It also urged security agencies to protect people in vulnerable communities. In its view, mining sites, farmlands, rural settlements and community roads should not be places where people risk death while earning a living.
What Happened at the Mining Site
The attack took place at about 5pm on Friday. The site is in the Jamus area of Kazok villages, in Gashish District. The victims were men working at the site.
The association named two of them as John Mafulul, 53, and Ezekiel Yohanna, 50. It did not name the third victim in the statement. Police have not commented in the report.
Another Death From an Earlier Attack
BYM also announced the death of Bulus Chun Pam. He was from Gwom Ajang in Foron District, also in Barkin Ladi. He was wounded in an attack on October 7 and taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). He died on Friday.
Tengwong called his death another painful loss for his family and community.
A Police Officer Also Killed
The association sent condolences to the Nigeria Police Force. A police officer was reportedly killed along Kwi Road on Thursday. It also sympathised with his family.
What the Group Wants
BYM listed several demands:
- Investigate the attacks and arrest those responsible.
- Bring the suspects to justice.
- Increase security patrols around mining sites, rural settlements and access roads.
- Improve intelligence gathering and early-warning systems.
