Olori Atuwatse III Says the Olu of Warri Will Not Take Another Wife

The wife of the Olu of Warri, Olori Ivie Atuwatse III, has said her husband, Ogiame Atuwatse III, will not embrace polygamy, adding that she alone is enough for him.

The queen consort spoke in an interview with BBC News Pidgin, published on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in which she also talked about her marriage, her personal style and her role in the palace.

On Polygamy

Asked what she would do if the monarch changed his mind, she dismissed the possibility. She said the matter was settled and that he would not change his position. She added, with some humour, that she is enough for him because she is like three women in one.

Her remarks follow the Olu’s own comments on the subject in a separate BBC News Pidgin interview in January 2026. He explained then why he has remained married to one wife despite the tradition of polygamy among monarchs. He said he was not given the grace for it, that the demands of the throne already stretch his time, and that he prefers to protect the peace of his home and family.

Life Married to a King

The Olori said one of the things she enjoys most about her marriage is watching the public celebrate her husband’s achievements. She said she celebrates him too, and that the world’s admiration for him encourages her even more.

She admitted, however, that the Olu’s schedule can make it hard for the couple to spend enough time together because of the weight of his royal duties.

On Style and the Turban

A lawyer by training, the Olori also spoke about her signature turban and rejected the idea that her role limits her sense of style. She said she dresses the way she likes. Explaining why she covers her hair, she said, “My turban na my crown.” She added that covering her hair in “Queen mode” is her way of showing respect to the office she holds, and that she does not feel restricted by it.

In a lighter moment, she revealed that she is her husband’s stylist and helps coordinate how the two of them look together.

On Politics

The Olori said she has no personal ambition to run for political office. She encouraged women who are interested in politics to pursue it, noting that self-belief is important for women seeking leadership positions.

Background

Olori Atuwatse III and the Olu of Warri married in 2014 and have three children. Ogiame Atuwatse III was crowned the 21st Olu of Warri in August 2021, succeeding his uncle, Ogiame Ikenwoli.
