Liverpool’s 10 Best Academy Graduates, from Gerrard to Ngumoha

Date:

Liverpool’s academy has shaped English football for decades. Legends, trophy winners and world-class stars have all come through its doors.

Now a new name is gaining attention. Rio Ngumoha, 18, set up two goals in Liverpool’s 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal on Tuesday. His pace and flair have fans dreaming.

He still has a long way to go. But his rise is a good moment to look back at the best players the academy has produced.

1. Steven Gerrard

Gerrard leads the list. He rose from the youth ranks to become the heart of the club.

He wore the captain’s armband at 23 and kept it for more than a decade. His record at Anfield includes two FA Cups, three League Cups, a UEFA Cup and the 2005 Champions League.

That night in Istanbul defines his legacy. Liverpool came back from 3-0 down against AC Milan and won on penalties. Gerrard never lifted the Premier League trophy with his boyhood club. Even so, he remains the academy’s greatest product.

2. Michael Owen

Owen was a teenage sensation. He scored on his Premier League debut against Wimbledon in May 1997.

He then won the Golden Boot in two straight seasons, 1997-98 and 1998-99. The 2000-01 season was his peak. He scored 24 goals in 46 games as Liverpool won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

That year, Owen won the Ballon d’Or. He became the first Liverpool player to claim the award.

3. Robbie Fowler

Fowler was a natural finisher. He scored on his League Cup debut against Fulham. In the return leg, he scored five.

His goals kept coming through his teenage years. Fans loved him and nicknamed him “God.”

He also played his part in the 2000-01 treble of cups. He remains one of the club’s finest young strikers.

4. Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold changed how people see the right-back role. His passing, crossing and vision set him apart.

Under Jurgen Klopp, he helped Liverpool win the Champions League and the Premier League. He created chances from wide areas and from set pieces.

His move to Real Madrid closed a major chapter. Still, he is one of the most gifted players the academy has ever produced.

5. Raheem Sterling

Sterling burst into the first team as a teenager. He won the Golden Boy award in 2014, given to Europe’s best young player.

He was a key part of the Liverpool side that narrowly missed the 2013-14 title. He left for Manchester City in 2015. In total, he played 129 games for Liverpool, scoring 23 goals and adding 18 assists.

His best years came elsewhere. Even so, his early form showed what the academy could produce.

6. Ian Callaghan

Callaghan holds Liverpool’s all-time appearance record with 857 games. The Liverpool-born player joined in 1959 and made his debut under Bill Shankly.

He helped the club win promotion to the First Division in 1962. Over his career, he won five league titles, two European Cups, two FA Cups and two UEFA Cups.

He also played for England at the 1966 World Cup, appearing in the group stage as the team went on to win it.

7. Jamie Carragher

Carragher made his senior debut at 18. He then spent his entire senior career at Anfield and played 737 games.

He was part of the 2000-01 cup treble. He also stood tall in the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

Consistency and leadership defined him. He is a clear example of an academy player who became a long-serving club icon.

8. Steve McManaman

McManaman was one of Liverpool’s most skilful attackers in the 1990s. He debuted at 18 and grew into a key player.

He loved to run at defenders with the ball. His best moment came in the 1995 League Cup final. He scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers and was named man of the match.

He later joined Real Madrid and won the Champions League twice.

9. Tommy Smith

Smith joined the academy as a teenager and became a hard, respected defender. Shankly trusted him, and he became a cornerstone of the club’s successful teams.

He made 637 appearances. His honours include two European Cups, four league titles, two FA Cups and two UEFA Cups.

His grit and commitment helped drive one of the club’s most successful eras.

10. Rio Ngumoha

Ngumoha closes the list as its youngest member. His career is only beginning.

The winger already beats defenders with pace and close control. His two assists against Villarreal added to the excitement.

He must now stay consistent at senior level before anyone compares him to the names above. For now, Liverpool fans will hope he keeps growing.
