Foreign flags were spotted during demonstrations in various states, including Kano, Kaduna, and Zamfara, prompting concerns about external influence on the situation. The government has emphasized its commitment to addressing the challenges facing Nigerians through domestic policies and reforms.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, stressed the importance of maintaining cordial international relations while underscoring Nigeria’s sovereignty. He warned that any foreign entity found to be supporting the protests or meddling in the country’s internal matters will face consequences.
The government has called for understanding and cooperation from the international community as it navigates economic challenges and strives to improve the lives of its citizens.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s support for peaceful assembly and freedom of expression while condemning the violence that erupted during some protests. He assured the public that investigations are underway to bring perpetrators to justice and prevent future occurrences.
Security Concerns and Arrests
The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of seven Polish nationals in Kano in connection with the display of Russian flags during protests. The agency emphasized that the arrests were not targeted at Polish citizens but were part of ongoing security investigations.
Protests Continue Amidst Violence
Despite efforts to quell the unrest, protests persisted in some areas, including Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where clashes between protesters and unidentified individuals led to injuries. The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the violence and urged protesters to remain peaceful and adhere to designated protest areas.
Curfew Eased in Some States
As the situation stabilizes in certain regions, the governments of Plateau and Bauchi states have relaxed previously imposed curfews, allowing for increased movement and economic activity.
