ASUU UNIZIK Suspends Indefinite Strike: What Caused the Dispute and Why Academic Work Has Resumed

Academic activities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, are resuming following a brief period of disruption. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIZIK Chapter, officially called off its indefinite industrial action on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The quick resolution offers immediate relief to thousands of students whose academic calendars were threatened by the sudden shutdown declared earlier in the week.

Why ASUU UNIZIK Declared the Strike

The local ASUU branch launched an indefinite strike on Monday, September 7, 2026. The union stated that its sole motivation was the non-payment of complete August 2026 earnings to academic staff.

Union leadership warned that lectures, assessments, and administrative duties would remain suspended until all financial outstanding balances were settled by the university management.

└── Sept 11, 2026: Full payments hit accounts; ASUU-UNIZIK officially suspends the strike.

The Reason for the Strike Suspension

The breakthrough came on Friday, September 11, when union executives confirmed that all affected members had received their complete payments.

In a joint memo signed by ASUU-UNIZIK Chairman Innocent Nnubia and Secretary Osita Nnajiofor, the union formally directed lecturers to return to their classrooms and offices immediately.

“The Branch Executive is pleased to inform all comrades that the complete August 2026 salary has now been paid to all members. Consequently, and in line with the resolution, the Branch hereby directs the immediate suspension of the withdrawal of services with effect from today, Friday 11th September.”

The union leaders commended the lecturers for their unity and discipline during the industrial action, urging them to stay vigilant as university administrative affairs unfold.

What Caused the Payment Shortfall? The University’s Side

While lecturers initially cited half-salary payments as the trigger for the strike, the university management provided a different perspective on the financial disagreement.

Speaking on behalf of the administration, UNIZIK spokesperson Aloysius Attah explained that staff received their full regular salaries. The shortfall occurred in the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for August 2026.

Understanding the EAA Shortfall

  1. Federal Directive: The Federal Government agreed with national ASUU leaders on EAA payments, but asked federal universities to cover these allowances using their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), promising later reimbursement.

  2. Revenue Deficit: UNIZIK experienced an unexpected drop in its monthly IGR during August 2026.

  3. Partial Disbursements: Because available funds fell short, the administration could pay only 50% of the Earned Academic Allowance for that month.

Once internal funding was realigned to clear the outstanding balances on Friday, the union agreed to end the impasse.

Key Takeaways for UNIZIK Students and Staff

  • Classroom Operations: Lectures and academic activities at the Awka campus and affiliated campuses resume immediately.

  • Unified Action Works: Union leaders credited collective solidarity for the swift resolution within four days.

  • Systemic Challenges: The conflict highlights ongoing funding pressures on Nigerian public universities, particularly regarding local IGR reliance for federal allowances.
