Madrid will stage the biggest night in European club football next summer. UEFA has picked Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano for the 2027 Champions League final.
The match is set for Saturday, June 5, 2027. UEFA announced the venue in September.
It will be the second final at the ground. Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 there in 2019.
The final will also be Madrid’s sixth European Cup or Champions League decider. The Santiago Bernabeu hosted four of them, in 1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010. Only London has staged more.
Munich and Barcelona Next in Line
UEFA has also confirmed the hosts for the following two seasons. Bayern Munich’s stadium, known as the Allianz Arena, will stage the 2028 final. It also hosted the 2012 and 2025 finals.
Barcelona’s Camp Nou will follow in 2029. It will be the stadium’s third final, after 1989 and 1999. AC Milan beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in 1989. Manchester United edged Bayern Munich 2-1 in 1999.
About the Metropolitano
Atletico moved into the stadium in 2017, replacing the old Vicente Calderon. The ground opened on September 16, 2017, in a La Liga game against Malaga. Antoine Griezmann scored its first goal in a 1-0 win.
It takes its name from the original Metropolitano, Atletico’s home until 1966. The venue sits on Avenida Luis Aragones in north-east Madrid and holds about 70,000 fans.
The stadium is also eco-friendly. It runs on LED lighting and solar panels. Recycled rainwater irrigates the pitch. UEFA says it was the world’s first fully LED stadium.
Beyond football, the ground has hosted rugby union, the World Rugby Sevens Series Grand Final, boxing and concerts. It is also on the shortlist of venues for the 2030 World Cup.
What the Winners Get
The champions will lift a trophy that stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. They will also face the Europa League winners in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup. A place in the 2027/28 league phase is guaranteed too, if they have not already qualified through their domestic league.
Meanwhile, the 2026/27 league phase is already underway. Match week three kicks off on Tuesday and continues on Wednesday.
