Kelechi Iheanacho has become the first player to score in 10 straight league matches in Turkish professional football. The Super Eagles forward reached the mark with two goals and an assist in Bursaspor’s 3-0 win over Muglaspor in the Turkish 1. Lig on Thursday.
The 30-year-old has scored in all 10 league games he has played for Bursaspor. Adding his appearance for Nigeria, he has now found the net in 11 matches in a row. Since leaving Celtic, he has 14 goals and three assists.
The match did not start smoothly for him. He thought he had put Bursaspor ahead in the 51st minute, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. He did not wait long to respond. He scored in the 58th minute, then added a second in the 79th. Four minutes later, he set up substitute Hüseyin Maldar for the third.
After the game, the former Manchester City and Leicester City striker posted a photo of himself in traditional Turkish dress on Instagram. He gave himself a new nickname, “Agabey”. The word is a respectful Turkish title that means “Big Brother” or “Boss”. His caption read: “We go ball till eternity, Kelechi Agabey.”
The result moves Bursaspor up to second in the table with 22 points. They are two points ahead of third-placed Iğdır FK and three behind leaders Kayserispor. Second place is one of the two automatic promotion spots to the Turkish Super Lig.
Bursaspor host Pendikspor on Monday.
