Ghana has arrested seven women for making bouquets and cake decorations out of real banknotes.
The Bank of Ghana says this is illegal. In its view, turning cash into craft items is a misuse of the cedi.
The arrests followed a tip-off. Police and central bank officials raided locations in Accra. The women were reportedly selling the decorated notes there.
The bank had already issued a warning in July. It said any act that lowers or damages the cedi’s lawful value could be an offence.
Dinah Bonzi, an official in the bank’s currency department, repeated the message. She said anyone who promotes or helps such activity may also face arrest and prosecution.
The bank also discouraged other common habits. It advised against “spraying” cash at parties. It also said people should not write on notes, alter them or use them as decoration.
The suspects are expected to be charged. If convicted, they could face a fine or a jail term.
