An 83-year-old grandmother is back in custody. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it caught her with illegal drugs less than 18 months after her first arrest.
Officers picked up Uloma Uchechi Sunday at her home in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State. The arrest happened on Wednesday, October 7. The agency says she had methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, wrapped around her waist under a cloth.
The NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, shared the details in a statement on Sunday. He said officers moved after receiving a tip. The tip claimed she ran a drug joint where criminals gathered and troubled the neighbourhood.
This was not her first encounter with the agency. On May 17, 2025, officers arrested her at the same address. Her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, was arrested with her.
The agency says it recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol. Both women admitted the offences. A court gave each a choice of 12 months in prison or a N200,000 fine. They paid the fine and went home.
According to the NDLEA, she did not stay away from the trade. The statement claims she went back to it soon after her release. It also says she grew the business by setting up a joint that sheltered dangerous people.
The agency has not said when she will be charged or whether her daughter is involved this time.
