Peter Obi has told the BBC he won the 2023 presidential election. In the same breath, he admitted he has no evidence. The ruling party has now responded sharply.
What Obi Said
Obi spoke in a recent BBC interview. He said he does not like revisiting the past. Even so, he insisted he won the last election.
He then added that there is no evidence. According to him, not everything rests on evidence.
APC Reacts
The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council issued a statement on Friday. Its spokesperson, Dele Alake, signed it.
The council called Obi’s claim a troubling display of delusion. It also accused him of ignoring facts and the truth. In its words, a candidate who placed a distant third should not keep claiming victory without proof.
The Council Points to the Courts
The council insists that President Bola Tinubu won the election. It noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner. The Presidential Election Petition Court later upheld that outcome. The Supreme Court then did the same.
A Challenge Over Anambra Debts
The council also raised a separate matter. It urged Obi to keep a promise he made earlier. He had said he would quit the 2027 presidential race if records showed his administration left liabilities in Anambra State.
The council claims that financial records from the state already confirm such liabilities. Obi has not yet responded to this claim in the report.
Defence of the Tinubu Government
Finally, the council defended the Tinubu administration. It said economic reforms have steadied the economy. It added that they have also expanded infrastructure and backed small businesses. In its view, healthcare, education and job creation have improved as well.
Obi and 2027
Obi has been linked with the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election. His latest remarks and the APC’s reply suggest that the 2023 result will remain a talking point as the next race nears.
