The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for about 25 days. The agency says the works are needed to repair a badly worn surface.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, announced the plan on Thursday through the agency’s X handle. The closure is tentatively set to begin on October 20, 2026. However, FAAN stressed that the date remains subject to final confirmation.
Why the Runway Needs Work
According to FAAN, parts of the runway have deteriorated. Potholes and wide surface cracks have appeared. Recent heavy rainfall has made the damage worse.
The agency said the repairs are necessary to bring the runway back to a safer operating condition.
What the Works Will Cover
The project will include pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of damaged sections. FAAN also plans to extend the runway.
The extension will allow the airport to handle wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region grows. The agency said this should improve passenger comfort and make travel smoother.
Timing Ahead of the Festive Season
FAAN said the repairs are timed to beat the Christmas rush. Passenger and flight traffic usually rises sharply at that time of year. The agency wants the runway ready before then.
Advice for Passengers
FAAN urged travellers planning to use the airport during the closure to stay in touch with their airlines. They should check for flight schedule updates and alternative arrangements.
The agency promised to keep talking to stakeholders. It will announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they are final.
FAAN also thanked airport users for their understanding and cooperation while the works go on.
