A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has died in a hotel room in Edo State. Police have arrested three people and opened an investigation.
The lecturer is Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science. He was found dead at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
What Police Say Happened
The Edo State Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, gave the account. According to her, the command received a report at about 8pm on Monday, October 5, 2026.
She said Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged a 21-year-old woman, whom police described as a sex worker. He later sent her out to buy water, Ikoedem said.
“Upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,” she said.
Three Persons in Custody
Police arrested the hotel owner, the hotel manager and the woman. All three are in custody and assisting investigators.
His body has been moved to the mortuary at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital. Police have not stated the cause of death.
University Reacts
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of AAU. He stressed that the incident happened off campus.
He added that the woman is not a student of the university.
