A woman has been arrested in Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. She is accused of beating her young niece to death over a missing ₦500.
What Happened
The incident reportedly happened on Monday, October 5, 2026. It was in the Baaki area, near Hope Academy, Jato-Aka.
The suspect is said to be the daughter of one Iorember. She allegedly accused her brother’s two children of stealing ₦500.
Residents say she did not question the children. She allegedly beat them instead. She is also accused of tying the girl in the sun and applying pepper to her body.
The girl reportedly died from the abuse. Her brother is said to have survived with a fractured hand.
Attempted Cover-Up
The woman allegedly moved the body into a room and locked the door. She reportedly untied the child and left the rope outside.
When people asked questions, she reportedly claimed the rope belonged to a goat. Neighbours insisted, forced the door open, and found the child dead.
Grandmother’s Reaction
Eyewitnesses say the children’s grandmother was present. She allegedly did not stop the abuse. She reportedly defended her daughter afterwards.
Police Action
The Nigeria Police Force, Jato-Aka, intervened and arrested the suspect. No official statement had been issued at the time of writing.
Calls for Justice
Residents are urging that the case should not be swept aside. They are calling for a full investigation and prosecution.
