The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has asked President Bola Tinubu to act on the high cost of living. Its chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Yohanna, said the hardship has become too much for Nigerians.
Yohanna is also the Bishop of Kontagora Diocese. He spoke at an interdenominational service in Kontagora marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Call for Economic Relief
The bishop urged the President to make “frantic efforts” to stabilise the economy. He also asked him to protect lives and property, especially in areas hit by insecurity.
He listed what Nigerians are waiting for. These include a sharp drop in fuel and food prices, lower inflation, a stronger naira and higher external reserves.
Yohanna also asked leaders to turn policy reforms into real gains for citizens. He named job creation, better infrastructure and lower living costs for ordinary people.
“Nigeria Shall Rise Again”
The bishop admitted the country has seen both triumph and trial. “Because Nigeria has endured, Nigeria shall rise again,” he said.
He said the challenges are huge but can be overcome. “By the grace of God, there will be light at the end of the tunnel,” he added.
Prayer alone is not enough, he said. Believers must back it with action and become better citizens in every area of life.
Keep Politics Out of Church
Yohanna also spoke about the coming elections. He said the church must stay non-partisan.
He warned against turning Christian gatherings into campaign platforms. Religious leaders, he said, should promote peace and responsible participation.
He ended with a prayer for a new Nigeria. In it, every child can dream and chase that dream. Diversity unites people instead of dividing them.
Governor Asks for Continued Prayers
Governor Mohammed Bago did not attend. Permanent Secretary Jonathan Wasa represented him.
Wasa urged residents to keep praying for the nation and for Niger State. He asked them to pray that leaders at all levels would guide the country to greatness.
He also asked them to thank God for unity in diversity despite the challenges. The governor hopes for a better and more prosperous Niger State and Nigeria, he said.
