Chairman Joash Amupitan is expected to update Nigerians on the voters’ register, candidate nominations and logistics on Tuesday.
Nigeria’s electoral umpire will give the public a progress report on the 2027 general elections this week.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and a press conference on Tuesday, October 6, to mark 100 days to the polls. It will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, starting at 10am.
INEC Chairman Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, will address the gathering. The commission announced the event in a statement on Sunday.
According to INEC, the briefing will cover how far preparations have gone. It will touch on the voters’ register, candidate nominations and logistics. It will also explain the steps the commission is taking to protect the integrity of the process.
The commission says the meeting is also meant to strengthen ties with the groups that play a central role in running and securing the elections.
Political party leaders are on the guest list. So are security agencies that sit on the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, along with diplomats and development partners. Civil society groups and election observers will attend as well.
In addition, INEC expects disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth groups and media executives.
Attendance at the venue is by invitation only. Journalists and guests must show their invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
Ordinary Nigerians can still follow from home. INEC says the event will be shown live on major national television stations and streamed on its official social media pages.
The briefing comes as preparations enter a critical phase. With 100 days left, the commission still has to complete its logistical, administrative and technological arrangements. On Tuesday, Nigerians will hear how ready INEC says it is, and how it plans to use the time that remains.
