Heavy rain turned the streets of the southeastern town into rivers, with cars floating away and firefighters carrying out a large-scale rescue.
A 102-year-old woman has died and 90 people have been rescued after floods hit the town of Madrigueras in southeastern Spain, regional authorities said on Saturday.
Heavy rain fell on Friday, and the water quickly flooded the streets. Cars were seen floating, which led to a large rescue operation by emergency crews in the Castilla-La Mancha region.
Firefighters found the woman’s body inside her home. Water in the house had risen to more than one metre (about three feet).
Authorities said 142 litres of rain fell per square metre on the town, which has about 4,760 residents.
Heavy rain also hit many other areas of southeastern and northeastern Spain on Friday.
The floods come after Spain’s hottest summer on record. Almost 2,150 people are thought to have died from heat-related causes in August.
