Gridlock in Lagos: President Tinubu’s Return Leaves Commuters Stranded

Lagos motorists and commuters faced severe gridlock near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) and surrounding routes following security restrictions for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s arrival.

The President returned to Nigeria after a four-week working vacation in Paris, France. His arrival in Lagos caused long traffic delays across key transit hubs, including routes connecting the airport to Ikeja, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and the Third Mainland Bridge.

Why Was the Traffic Closed?

According to Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu routed his return through Lagos to take part in official events and political engagements:

  • MKO Abiola Tribute: Attending a film premiere at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu honoring the late Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

  • Political Consultations: Holding strategic meetings with political leaders and key associates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Traffic control measures began before 5:00 PM along major corridors, halting vehicle movement well ahead of the presidential aircraft landing.

Public Reaction and Backlash

The prolonged road closures sparked frustration among residents, commuters, and travelers who took to social media to voice their concerns.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong criticized the extent of the security lockdown:

“How can the busiest airport in the commercial capital of a country be put on lockdown for hours because an absentee President is on his way back to the country? Is this the best way to protect him? Is there no better way to manage the presidential movement in this country?”

Other commuters highlighted the practical impact on emergency situations and daily travel. A social media user recalled a past instance along Abuja’s airport road where a pregnant woman required emergency transportation after being trapped in presidential gridlock for over three hours.

While some residents noted that road closures are standard protocol for head-of-state movements globally, many questioned why alternative arrangements were not used in a high-density urban center like Lagos.

Presidential Travel Logistics: A Contrast in Approaches

The incident renewed discussions on how presidential movements should be managed in crowded cities.

During the 13th Olusegun Agagu Memorial Lecture, former President Goodluck Jonathan reflected on managing his transit through Lagos during his term:

  • Helicopter Transit: Jonathan noted that driving through Lagos required extensive traffic control, creating severe citywide delays.

  • Minimizing Disruption: To avoid gridlock, his administration frequently used helicopters to transport the presidential delegation directly from the airport to state residences or event venues.

The contrast between air shuttle logistics and extended road closures remains a central debate regarding VIP security protocols versus public convenience in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
