Flight Delays Surge: Over 4,000 Domestic Flights Delayed in August 2026
Traveling by air within Nigeria came with significant disruption in August 2026. Official data released by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reveals that domestic airlines delayed 4,765 flights and outrightly cancelled 36 others during the month.
Out of 7,961 total domestic flights operated by 15 air carriers, nearly 60 percent (59.9%) suffered delays. This means more than half of all domestic travelers experienced schedule disruptions last month.
Breakdown of the Disruptions
The operational summary published on the NCAA’s official X handle highlights heavy disruption across major operators, led by the country’s largest carriers:
-
Air Peace: Operated 1,864 flights—the highest volume in the country—and recorded 1,330 delays, affecting 71.4% of its schedule.
-
United Nigeria Airlines: Recorded among the highest disruption rates alongside Air Peace.
-
Total Cancelled Flights: 36 flights were completely grounded across all domestic carriers.
Regulator Cracks Down on Consumer Protection Rights
Alongside the operational report, the aviation regulator signaled an increased focus on passenger rights by penalizing airlines for service failures.
The NCAA issued a ₦15 million fine against RwandAir following an unresolved passenger complaint involving damaged luggage.
According to NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu, the fine was enforced under Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, which dictates strict guidelines for passenger compensation and baggage issues.
Key Mandates Issued to RwandAir:
-
Pay a ₦15 million regulatory fine for failing to resolve the claim within the mandatory timeframe.
-
Replace the affected passenger’s damaged luggage.
-
Pay $170 in first-need compensation to the passenger.
What Passengers Need to Know About NCAA Part 19
The enforcement action serves as a reminder to travelers regarding their rights under Nigerian aviation law:
-
Prompt Resolution: Airlines must address luggage complaints within specified statutory deadlines.
-
Immediate Financial Relief: Passengers are entitled to first-need expenses when luggage is delayed or damaged.
-
Escalation Rights: If an airline ignores a valid claim, passengers can report the issue directly to the NCAA Consumer Protection Directorate.
