Albania to Ban TikTok for One Year, PM Edi Rama Announces

Date:

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced a year-long ban on the social media platform TikTok, starting January 2025, as part of measures to curb its perceived negative influence on youth. Speaking during a meeting in Tirana with teachers, parents, and psychologists, Rama described TikTok as the “thug of the neighborhood.”

“We are going to chase this thug out of our neighborhood for one year,”

Rama declared, adding that the government will introduce programs aimed at enhancing student education and helping parents monitor their children’s online activities.

The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a 14-year-old student killed and another injured during a fight near a school in Tirana, reportedly triggered by a social media confrontation. The incident has sparked national debate on the impact of social networks on young people, with psychologists and educators raising concerns about online behavior and safety.

Rama criticized the platform for its contrasting approaches, pointing out that in China, TikTok promotes educational and cultural content, while outside China, it is filled with “scum and mud.” He questioned the necessity of such a platform in Albania, where it has gained significant traction among the youth.

TikTok, which boasts over one billion active users worldwide, has faced global scrutiny over its content and alleged misuse. Accusations of espionage have been raised in the United States, and the platform is under investigation by the European Union for its role in influencing Romania’s presidential election in favor of a far-right candidate. Several countries have already banned TikTok for use in state institutions.

Albania’s move to block the platform underscores growing concerns over the influence of social media on young minds and the need for stricter digital policies.
