FIFA Drops Massive Brawling Bans on Argentina Following World Cup Final Drama

FIFA has cracked down hard on Argentina following chaotic scenes at the end of the World Cup final. Midfielder Leandro Paredes faces a massive 10-match suspension for initiating a post-match physical altercation against Spain.

To make matters worse, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) was slapped with a heavy £235,647 ($321,000) fine for displaying a controversial political banner following their semi-final win over England.

What Triggered the World Cup Final Brawl?

The drama erupted immediately after Argentina’s extra-time defeat to Spain in New Jersey. Tensions boiled over on the pitch:

  • Leandro Paredes grabbed Spain’s Eric García by the neck before shoving substitute Gavi to the turf, earning a direct red card for violent conduct.

  • Nahuel Molina attempted to knock down Spain captain Rodri as he ran past.

  • Roberto Ayala, part of Argentina’s coaching staff, attempted to strike Dani Olmo during the chaos.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee moved quickly to hand down severe bans and financial penalties.

Summary of FIFA’s Disciplinary Sanctions

Individual / Entity Punishment (Suspension) Fine (GBP)
Leandro Paredes (Argentina) 10-Match Ban £66,000
Nahuel Molina (Argentina) 7-Match Ban £66,000
Roberto Ayala (Argentina Coach) 3-Match Ban £22,000
Thiago Almada (Argentina) 1-Match Ban £22,000
Gavi (Spain) 1-Match Ban £22,000

Heavy Fine for Political Falklands Banner

The disciplinary measures go beyond the post-final brawl. FIFA also penalized Argentina for displaying a political statement following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England in Atlanta.

Argentine players unrolled a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) on the pitch, directly violating FIFA’s strict rules against political messages during official matches.

Additional Penalties and Stadium Restrictions

FIFA mandated several extra conditions alongside the financial fines:

  • Stadium Fan Capacity Cut: Argentina must play its next two home international fixtures at 50% stadium capacity.

  • Anti-Discrimination Mandate: $100,000 of the fine must be invested directly into national anti-discrimination campaigns.

  • Suspended Fine: Another $100,000 portion of the penalty remains suspended pending future conduct.

Despite the heavy sanctions, Argentina still takes home $34 million in total prize money from their World Cup run.
