He said: “I spent my jail term at the male correctional centre (cell), and I loved it. I’ll give reasons why I loved it.
Controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has recently spoken out about his experience during his six-month prison term, shedding light on why he was placed in a male cell and how he coped with the situation.
In April 2024, Bobrisky was sentenced by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos for Naira abuse, a sentence that saw him serve time in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre. Since his release on August 5th, Bobrisky has kept busy with parties and photoshoots, but he finally opened up during an interview on the ‘Curiosity Made Me Ask’ podcast with skit maker Bae Barbie.
Reflecting on his time in jail, Bobrisky shared that being placed in a male cell made his experience more enjoyable. “I spent my jail term at the male correctional centre (cell), and I loved it,” he revealed. He explained that being the only different person in the cell garnered him special attention and care, which he believed wouldn’t have been the case in a female cell.
Bobrisky also addressed rumors about receiving VIP treatment during his sentence. While speculation arose due to his appearance post-release, he dismissed these claims, emphasizing that he served his time just like any other inmate.
The crossdresser further explained why he pleaded guilty to the charges of Naira abuse. Despite advice from his lawyer to plead not guilty, Bobrisky chose to be honest because he believed in telling the truth, even if it didn’t guarantee his freedom. “I believe that when you tell the truth in court, sometimes it sets you free, and sometimes it doesn’t,” he said.
Interestingly, Bobrisky expressed a desire to return to prison, viewing his time there as a much-needed break from his hectic lifestyle. He saw the sentence as an attempt to break his spirit but remained unshaken, stating that he felt stronger and more refined after the experience.
Bobrisky’s case is reminiscent of actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who faced a similar sentence for spraying and trampling on new Naira notes at a wedding in Lagos. Both cases highlight the legal repercussions of Naira abuse in Nigeria, raising questions about the severity of the penalties for such actions.
As Bobrisky continues to navigate life after prison, his story serves as a reminder of the unexpected turns that can come with fame and the resilience required to face them head-on.
