Date:

A devastating stampede in Ibadan has claimed the lives of 35 minors, with six others in critical condition, according to an update provided by the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Osifeso Adewale. Those injured are currently undergoing intensive medical interventions.

Overcrowding Sparks Chaos

The incident occurred during an event held at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan. Originally planned for 5,000 participants, the gathering attracted over 7,500 attendees, overwhelming the venue’s capacity. Eyewitness accounts reveal that parents and children rushed to enter the premises, creating a deadly crush at the main gate that trapped many victims.

The principal of the school, Abdullahi Fasasi, has reportedly been detained for questioning as authorities investigate the circumstances leading to the tragic event.

Nation Mourns

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu expressed her condolences in a statement, offering support to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State.

“I sympathise with the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. I also pray for a speedy recovery for those still in the hospital. May the Lord grant peace to Oyo State, comfort to grieving families, and hope in this difficult time,” Tinubu stated.

Calls for Accountability

The incident highlights the urgent need for improved crowd management at large events, especially those involving children. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent such tragedies in the future.
