National Grid Collapse: What Is Really Going On?

What Is Really Going On? Nigerians Demand Answers from the Minister of Power Over National Grid Collapse

For the 12th time in 2024, Nigeria’s national grid (electricity) has collapsed, leaving citizens to grapple with power outages across the country. As frustrations boil over, Nigerians are asking: what is really going on?

Despite significant investments and repeated promises to fix the power sector, the nation continues to face grid failures at an alarming rate. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has remained silent about the latest collapse, while @NationalGridNg confirmed the incident on their official social media page. This silence from authorities has only fueled speculations and growing mistrust among the populace.

Nigerians Express Their Outrage on the National Grid Collapse

On social media, Nigerians expressed outrage.

“Every five market days, the grid collapses,” tweeted @nuradeeeen. “Is someone cashing out while we suffer?”

Many are now directing their anger at the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, calling for his immediate resignation. Critics, like the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), have labeled the repeated failures as a testament to the government’s inability to manage the nation’s energy infrastructure effectively.

The grid’s collapse highlights a deeper systemic failure. Since the start of the year, Nigerians have endured a series of power outages, with no concrete solutions in sight. Despite billions borrowed to “fix” the power sector, there is little to show for it.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration faces mounting pressure to address the situation. Is it time to overhaul the leadership in the power sector? Nigerians are demanding accountability and immediate action to prevent further collapses.

The question remains: what is the government’s plan to ensure stable electricity in Nigeria, or will 2024 end as another dark year for the power sector?
