The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to residents to be vigilant when purchasing goods, following the discovery of expired products circulating in the market. This alert comes as the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) intensifies efforts to prosecute businesses violating consumer safety regulations.
One such case involves Blessed Happy Homes Superstore, located in Festac Town, which was sealed for selling expired items, endangering public health.
Lagos Expired Products: A Public Health Crisis
During a recent operation, LASCOPA officials uncovered expired goods, including baby milk, beverages, body creams, and perfumes, at the Festac superstore. Some products had expiry dates as far back as April 2023.
The store manager initially resisted the enforcement team, but legal action followed, leading to a bench warrant for the store’s owner. The owner is now scheduled to appear before the Magistrate Court at the Lagos Taskforce Headquarters in Bolade–Oshodi on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
“It’s alarming that such negligence persists, jeopardizing the health of unsuspecting consumers,” said LASCOPA General Manager, Afolabi Solebo.
Government’s Zero-Tolerance Approach
The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for consumer rights violations. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that the prosecution of the superstore owner will serve as a deterrent to others.
“While we support business growth, it must align with ethical practices and consumer protection regulations,” Wahab stated.
LASCOPA has committed to inspecting more businesses across Lagos in the coming days, aiming to curb the circulation of expired goods and ensure a safer marketplace for residents.

To safeguard public health, LASCOPA urges Lagosians to check expiry dates and product labels carefully before making purchases. Solebo stressed that consumer vigilance is critical in preventing harm caused by expired goods.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or businesses selling expired products to LASCOPA for immediate action.
