Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared its intention to prosecute individuals responsible for building collapses across the country. Housing and Urban Development Minister, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this announcement during a review meeting with stakeholders in the built environment.
The minister emphasized the need for thorough investigations and the subsequent prosecution of those found culpable. To facilitate this process, the ministry’s Building Collapse Committee has been tasked with developing a comprehensive checklist outlining the roles and responsibilities of professionals involved in construction.
The checklist will aid in identifying potential lapses and assigning blame in the event of a building collapse. It will cover various stages of the construction process, including design, approval, and supervision.
Minister Dangiwa stressed the importance of holding accountable those who neglect professional standards and compromise the safety of buildings. He urged regulatory bodies to collaborate closely and implement stringent measures to prevent future tragedies.
The government’s commitment to addressing the recurring issue of building collapse is seen as a significant step towards ensuring public safety and accountability in the construction industry.
