Eastern Cape Roads Claim Lives as Holiday Travel Intensifies

Date:

South Africa’s Eastern Cape province is mourning the loss of lives after two tragic road accidents over the weekend. On the R61 near Bizana, a head-on collision between a bakkie and a sedan left three people dead and two critically injured. In a separate incident, a crash on the N9 near Graaff-Reinet claimed the lives of 13 passengers in the early hours of Reconciliation Day.

Authorities have attributed the accidents to reckless driving and fatigue, which are common during the holiday season. Traffic volumes on South African highways surge in December as families travel for festive celebrations. Emergency services have urged motorists to plan their journeys carefully, take regular breaks, and avoid speeding to prevent further tragedies.

The Eastern Cape government has ramped up road safety campaigns, deploying additional traffic officers and mobile speed cameras. Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety regulations. “We cannot continue losing lives due to avoidable negligence on our roads,” he stated.

As South Africa enters its peak holiday period, the accidents serve as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by high traffic volumes and unsafe driving practices. Officials are calling for collective responsibility from all road users to ensure a safer festive season.
