Niger Republic’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has made startling allegations against France, accusing the nation of funding and orchestrating destabilization efforts in Niger and its neighboring countries. He also implicated Nigerian authorities, suggesting their complicity in these alleged activities.
Claims of a Terrorist Base in Nigeria
General Tiani alleged that France is planning to establish a terrorist operational center in Gaba, a forested area in Sokoto State, Nigeria, under the guise of fighting terrorism. He claimed that Nigerian authorities are aware of these plans and have not acted to prevent them.
“It is France that gave the weapons to Boko Haram terrorists so that if a Chadian military jet came to strike them, the terrorists could use the weapons provided by the French government to bring it down.”
Tiani also revealed that intelligence from arrested terrorists identified a group called ‘Lakurawa’ as being involved in these plans. He claimed this information was shared with Nigerian authorities for verification but mishandled.
Financial Support and Weapons Supply
The general accused France of providing financial aid to Nigerian authorities to set up a military base in Borno State. He described this as a front for covert destabilization efforts targeting Niger and its neighbors.
“The information we gathered from the terrorists we arrested indicated that there is an ongoing discussion, and Nigerian leaders are aware of it.”
Additionally, Tiani alleged that France has been supplying Boko Haram terrorists with advanced weaponry, which was reportedly used to shoot down military jets. He claimed these weapons were provided to counter Chadian airstrikes on terrorist strongholds.
Allegations Against Nigerian Officials
Tiani accused Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the former Director-General of Nigeria’s National Intelligence Agency (NIA), of mishandling the intelligence and being linked to terrorist networks. Despite initial promises of investigation, Tiani alleged no meaningful action was taken.
“We contacted Ahmed Rufai Abubakar for confirmation. He assured us of an investigation, but the intelligence was mishandled.”
Regional and Diplomatic Implications
These allegations cast a shadow over Nigeria’s role in counterterrorism and raise serious concerns about foreign influence in the region. If substantiated, these claims could significantly impact diplomatic relations between Niger, Nigeria, and France.
